This man has come to be known in WFA circles as the Samuel Willard of York and Sanford, Maine (after his marriage place and death place). The facts of his adult life and descendants are firmly attested by his family. There is only the 1915 publishing committee's strong belief to support placing him as the son of Simon Willard (1676-1712) and Elizabeth Alden (1665- ). He died at age 90 therefore his birthdate was 1702 or 1703. Their reasoning goes thusly:

a) the son of Simon & Elizabeth was born at the same time as this man;

b) there were no other known Samuel Willards born around that time;

c) a nephew of Simon & Elizabeth, Rev. Samuel Willard (1705-1741), had settled in 1730 as pastor of the church at Biddeford, Maine and thus it is reasonable to look upon Willards residing nearby as possible relatives.39
